The following article sets out to analyse the contributions to political theory made by various Latin American authors at an academic event held in Mexico in 1980: the Morelia seminar entitled "Hegemony and Political Alternatives in Latin America", published in book form five years later with the same title. At that time, the political moment in the Latin American region was marked by a double circumstance in which the intellectual productions of the seminar were inscribed: on the one hand, the predominance of military dictatorships in the Southern Cone, and on the other, the revolutionary upsurge in Central America. These political coordinates made the Mexican academy an unprecedented meeting place for the region's critical intelligentsia, and the Morelia seminar became a real milestone in the debates on Antonio Gramsci's work in Latin America. Likewise, this activity took place in the context of the discussions that in Latin Europe were known as "the crisis of Marxism", which had strong resonances in Latin American political theory. In this framework, this paper seeks to investigate the approaches deployed in the seminar around three theoretical issues: the critique of "class reductionism", the construction of a new social order and the question of political subjects and organisational forms in the socialist strategy.
