This article aims to analyze the spontaneity and the conscientious leadership in Antonio Gramsci's writings. Contrarily to the accusations of vanguardism, we tried to show that Gramsci's political theory is essentially founded on the democratic empowerment of the subaltern groups. Next, we will deal with the contemporary relevance of these arguments for debating Occupy Wall Street and its change from an act of occupation to a permanent organization.
