Unlike the Americanism theme, which received extensive treatment in the Quaderni del carcere, Antonio Gramsci expended little attention to the concepts of America and Latin America. The article reconstructs Gramsci's reflection on these concepts, showing how they are discussed with reference to Europe. With regard to America, the Sardinian Marxist reflects on the possibility of expressing a new civilizational form in which the intellectuals were rooted in the industrial world. Latin America, in turn, would be a particular case in which a Kulturkampf would not yet have developed fully and traditional intellectuals linked to clergy and military castes would predominate. Finally, the article shows how for Gramsci the presence in Latin America and Latin America of subaltern groups - blacks and Indians - whose cultures could not be simply reduced to European culture, configured the research on the political question of intellectuals in more complex field and reoriented to the study of the formation of modern nation-states.
