Zum Problem der Gesellschaftlichkeit und Rationalität der Gefühle / Emotionen

Special issue «Gefühle/Emotionen, Gramsci».
The text discusses theories of emotions which emphasize the social relativity and rationality of emotions in contrast to traditional psychologys notion of their internal and irrational character. The author argues that it does not suffice to point to the societal frame and/or use of individual behavior in order to overcome the individualising and naturalising implications of the criticised positions. Rather, it requires a concept of the natural human societability, i.e., of peoples fundamental potency and subjective necessity to control the conditions of their life. This comprehends a conception of peoples responsibility which is not restricted to their personal behavior but includes their responsibility for the societal conditions and hence also for the situation and behavior of others. Without such a concept, it is shown, the ideological justification of suppression as a necessary control of peoples alleged natural asociality, and the derogation of their resistance against it as proof of their irrationality will even inform those theories which explicitly question them.
