Hegemony and the Habitus: Gramsci, Bourdieu, and James Scott on the Problem of Resistance
«It is argued that forming a counterhegemony depends on the dominant system of meanings, values, & practices that it resists; a counterhegemony must be constructed in terms that are not those of the hegemonic order. The argument uses (1) Antonio Gramsci's (e.g., 1985) thesis about the information of a counterhegemony; (2) Pierre Bourdieu's (e.g., 1990) concept of symbolic capital & the tendency for dominated classes to emulate dominant class practices, continuing the dominant classes' symbolic distance, thus preventing the formation of a counterhegemony; & (3) James Scott's (1990) analysis of resistance & hegemony from a micropolitical perspective, claiming that hegemony takes place at the level of action, not thought....» C.
