Restoring American Cultural Institutions

fa parte di Society , XXXVI , 2 , January-February, 1999 , pp. 35 - 40
In US institutions of higher education, «enforcement of political correctness has curtailed thoughtful debate about morally complex issues.... Gramsci's strategy to overtake modern industrial democracies by delegitimizing traditional values & institutions is described & compared to the "long march" of political correctness through US institutions. Gramsci's goal of a "new conformism," based on cultural penetration to ideologically assimilate traditional intellectuals, is being replayed on US campuses... Regaining intellectual freedom will require a persistent effort to challenge the current ideological hegemony by letting the public know how politicized many academic programs have become, & by creating alternatives to institutions & associations that have thwarted the expression of serious scholars.» [J. Lindroth].
