Germany: Hegemonic Power and Economic Gain?
"Examines the effect of the Federal Republic of Germany's economic might on neighboring European countries, drawing on secondary economic data... Effects on Eastern European countries are explored by looking at their relationships with states that comprised the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance. The hypothesis of German hegemony is tested against standards set by Robert Keohane (1984) & Antonio Gramsci. Germany's budget contributions to the EU & financial assistance to Eastern Europe satisfied Keohane's definition of hegemony, while an econometric technique showed Germanys spillover effects in some countries of the EU to fulfill Gramsci's criteria. Taken together, results suggest that Germany played the role of regional hegemony in Europe prior to unification & continues to do so."
