Review of Michael Walzer, The Company of Critics (1988). «This work offers an overview of twentieth-century social critics, all on the Left & persons of letters: Julien Benda, Martin Buber, Antonio Gramsci, Ignazio Silone, George Orwell, Albert Camus, Simone de Beauvoir, Herbert Marcuse, Michel Foucault, Breyten Breytenback, & the author himself. Issue is taken with the praise of some of these authors & disapproval of others for somewhat spurious reasons, as well as with Walzer's conception of social criticism & his unsupported assertion that particularistic values are more authentic than universalistic ones».
