Starting from a sentence pronounced by Giorgio Baratta in a roundtable organised by the ISRE in Nuoro (June 2007), the attempt is made to give an interpretation of Gramsci's notion of the subaltern and subalternity. Developing the connection between the thesis proposed by Baratta, and the text of the Prison Notebooks, we will show that the question cannot be posed correctly if it is separated from its relation to the theory of hegemony and of the integral State on the one hand, and to the philosophy of praxis on the other. As a matter of fact, as Baratta shows, the category of ''subaltern'' draws its contents from a particular ''experience'', whose transformation in ''knowledge'' is due to the peculiar ability of the philosophy of praxis to ''situate'' itself in the space of the relations of force. In this way, the ''subaltern'' does not appear as the witness of a sort of marginality or absolute otherness anymore, and can be redefined as the determinate expression of a hegemonic relationship.
