Rio de Janeiro; Iuperj/Revan, 1997, pp. 28-88.«Examines the relationship between passive revolution & Americanism, two foundational elements in Antonio Gramsci's workon the formation of the state in society. In the development of Gramscian thinking, these two views have been used to portray "facts" as more important than people in the process of agency formation. Gramsci is reevaluated here & it is argued that Americanism is impossible without passive revolution in the historical context, for which examples of such precedence are provided. It is concluded that social action cannot be reduced to events, but is instead inseparable from actors. This is particularly evident in the unique opportunities for individualism offered by Americanism, where grass-roots action based on holistic relationships now offers a viable alternative to the fracturous nature of state systems».
