«This study evaluates how prison writings provide a testimonial mirror for the dynamics prevalent in society and how the detainee comes to terms with the violence done to the psychical and social body in captivity. Furthermore, I demonstrate how hegemonic patterns are similar regardless of the political regime that relies upon their effectiveness. To illustrate this point, I investigate writings ranging from the letters of Antonio Gramsci in Fascist Italy, to the postwar prison terms in the testimonies of Vaclav Havel and Erica Glaser Wallach, victims of communist purges in, respectively, Czechoslovakia and East Germany, to the 1978 captivity letters of Aldo Moro, written in a liberal democracy....».
