«The work of Gramsci is used to explicate two very different but related definitions for hegemony. On the one hand, Gramsci described hegemony as a subtle and dynamic form of socialization through which the ruling class dominates the masses by willful consent rather than violence. On the other hand, Gramsci defined a new type of hegemony which could be an activist response to the more negative connotation: Gramsci explained that the workers could create a new, emancipatory hegemony».
