«... Alternatives to modernism in culture and ideology have been elaborated since the interwar period in Mediterranean Europe. In fact, by re-reading Antonio Gramsci, a wealth of concepts is derived for the exploration of in-between spaces in place of value-laden binary thinking. 'Post'-modernism itself as presented in geographical literature on the urban condition, can be deconstructed into a northern, artificial and populist variant, a southern, spontaneous and popular alternative, and their in-between spaces. This leads to the discovery of spatially-anchored theories and organic intellectuals (Gramsci's concept) of spatial restructuring in a geography of cultural and material life....».
