Civic Republicanism versus Social Struggle: A Gramscian Approach to Associationalism in Italy

[United States]

«...Antonio Gramsci's argument that a rich associational life will further the project of democracy only in combination with the ideological & strategic coherence of organized resistance to the specific form of elite domination. Robert Putnam's measures of institutional performance ("democracy") are used to compare these theories while disaggregating associational life into several categories: apolitical, white, & red. Results support Gramsci's theories: the interaction between the strength of Left parties & their related associations (recreational societies, women's leagues, youth groups, cooperatives) is the only significant predictor of democratic success».
