Haug, Wolfgang Fritz
Rethinking Gramsci's Philosophy of Praxis from one Century to the Next
English version of «Ripensare la filosofia della prassi» (1999).
«The writer examines the significance of Antonio Gramsci's interpretation of Marxism as philosophy of praxis and explores the contemporary relevance of such ideas. He argues that Gramsci achieved an epistemological break in his Prison Notebooks and that these texts therefore provide the criteria by which to assess his work as a whole. He considers how Gramsci's use of the term "philosophy of praxis" worked as an obstacle to the reception of his ideas under Marxism-Leninism. Dismissing the suggestion that this term was merely employed as a cipher for "Marxism" that would be overlooked by the prison censors, he contends that Gramsci deliberately used it to describe the trajectory that Marxist theory would have to follow in order not to have to depend on any traditional or alien philosophy».
