Imaginative Geographies

«Examines the grounding & implication of Edward Said's notion of reconceptualizing geography. Said's concept of geography is applied to three interpretations of the frontispiece of the Description de l'Egypte (Description of Egypt) & a production of Verdi's Aida. It is shown how mapping the intersection of culture & imperialism allows a reinterpretation of power, knowledge, geography, & history. The roots of Said's philosophy are seen in his impressions of colonialism & the politics of dispossession rooted in his Palestinian background. Said's Orientalist discourse of cultural & social history as applied to the Palestinian debate is clearly influenced by Michel Foucault & Antonio Gramsci» (S. Jameson).
