Subalternity and Gender: Problems of Post-Colonial Irishness

is part of Journal of Gender Studies , 5 , 3 , November, 1996 , pp. 363 - 373
"Examines the possible relationships between gender & nation in Irish culture, placing Ireland in the context of postcolonial theory & arguing that Gramsci's (1971) notion of the "subaltern" (later adapted by postcolonial theorists) offers a useful way in which to begin to understand how gender & Irishness coexist. It is argued that Gramsci's definition of the subaltern, when translated into a postcolonial context, implies a critique of the formation of nationalism as a force of liberation...."
