"Examines Gramscian ideas about the politics of seizing the state & the role of war of position (WOP) & war of movement (WOM) strategies in facilitating transformation in civil societies, through comparative case study analysis of workers' movements in Central Europe, 1917-1921, & South Africa, 1973-1994. Analysis reveals that the weakness of WOPs relative to WOMs was a crucial factor in the defeat of the workers' movements in Central Europe. On the contrary, WOP strategies were a significant factor in the successes of the South African trade union movement."
