Gramsci, Bakhtin and the Semiotics of Hegemony

is part of New Left Review , 216 , March-April, 1996 , 94-109
«The works of Antonio Gramsci and Mikhail Bakhtin, who both worked under conditions of dictatorship, are compared. Their analysis of B. Croce's work left them dissatisfied, as it encouraged a dominant speech community over contiguous, subordinate communities. They stressed maximizing dialogism to intensify representational adequacy. Gramsci stressed acquisition of mastery over the national language, which was denied to them by fascist educational policy. Bakhtin was implicitly critical of Stalin's ideology.».
