Antonio's B-Boys: Rap, Rappers, and Gramsci's intellectuals (Dissemination of Ideas Through Rap Music)

is part of Popular Music and Society , 19 , 4 , Winter, 1995 , 1-19
«Some contemporary black rap artists are intellectuals according to Antonio Gramsci's conception of organic intellectuals. Gramsci considers an individual, directly or indirectly, associated with the production and distribution of knowledge as an intellectual. Some hardcore rap artists of the black community attempt to build a strong opposition through the spread of subversive ideas and question the dominant culture by addressing their own marginalization. However, they work with the very mainstream culture and media that they oppose in their music».
